Daniel Session 4

The handwriting on the wall is a great story. As Babylon is falling, Belshazzar defiles the treasures of God, and Daniel calls him into account. It reminds us that even though we are called to be respectful and loving to those who oppose us, we must stand on conviction when the time comes.

The story of the Fiery Furnace is one of the most familiar in Scripture. It speaks not only to the power of God, but of His love for us as well.

This week we focus on Daniel's introduction to Babylon and his first encounter with King Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel's courageous reliance on God's supremacy over foreign deities highlights the exchange.

Daniel: Living With Lions - Session 1

Download | Duration: 00:53:22

The opening session of my seminar on Daniel. We will look at the book as it emphasizes four key truths:

  1. There is one God and He alone is in control.
  2. God loves us.
  3. His Anointed One will save us.
  4. A new world is coming.
Daniel contains some of the most familiar stories of Scripture. We will re-discover those stories and let them challenge us again.

One Way Jesus - Session 10

March 18, 2009

Download | Duration: 01:09:22

"All good things must come to an end." I don't know who said it, but it is regrettably true. One Way Jesus has been a highlight of my time here at Sound Life Church. I want to thank Jason for his involvement. His experience and perspective brought and level of depth and insight to the material that has enriched all of us.

The thing about Spiritual Humanism is that it is the dangerous combination of believable and desirable. I want to believe in something greater than me, but I want to be the most important thing in the universe. Spiritual Humanism allows me to satisfy my need for God, without having to commit to His sovereignty.

So what's the real difference between Christianity and Spiritual Humanism?

Ever eat a fat-free cookie?

No matter how much it may taste or look the same, we all know it's not the same.

Thanks,

Brian

Wow! What a night.

The details of Scientology are truly staggering. Afterward, I was sharing the details with my wife, telling her some of the things that I found amusing or couldn't believe that people would accept. As always, she brought me back to earth, reminding me that there is plenty about Christianity that people have a hard time accepting.

We are all searching for some kind of truth, and most of us are content to stay in a truth that works best for us. In fact, we make the "effectiveness" of a given truth its validation. I think it would be best for all if we would focus on the truth that we can share with people, the truth that has worked for us.

One Way Jesus - Session 8

The audio on tonight's podcast is a little funny, so sorry if things sound weird.

Each week, I seem to make the same of mistake of assuming that people won't be as interested in this session. But each week, people find something that grabs them.

Kabbalah goes on the list of religions that fascinate us because of the complex world they create. The levels, the alternate realities, and the hierarchy of divine beings draw us into a universe that is not only rich and elaborate, but that can be controlled though our efforts.

The universe that Christ offers us is actually quite simple. There is a God, and we can know Him. Our sin hinders that knowledge, but Christ's free offer of grace restores it. The grace is offered to all, and we respond to the gift by obeying God. That's it. No secret codes, no mystical chants. Only the power of a simple prayer, "God have mercy on a sinner like me."

Next week,
Scientology.

One Way Jesus - Session 7

Wow, what a night! What some may dismiss as harmless fun, we saw is the beginning of a life of darkness and bondage.

Over the last few weeks, have you begun to see the trend of these cults and teachings? The human pursuit of power and pleasure will always lead people to a path of destruction. We simply cannot lead our lives with us in the center. Jeremiah reminds us that, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" We must put Christ at the center of our lives, and let His command to love others drive our lives.

Remember not to live in fear, but to embrace the power and authority of the Holy Spirit in your life.

Thanks,
Brian

Next week,
Kabbalah

One Way Jesus - Session 6

Wednesday, February 18, 2009 -

Download | Duration: 01:08:24

I had an interesting conversation with one of our classmates this week. We both agreed that as we continue in journey, we are becoming more excited about the great things that Christianity offers. The freedom from works, from dependence on human understanding, from our own efforts, leads us to life in God.

We need to remember that Christ has given us a ministry to bring others into this great life we have discovered. We can bring the elements of Godly living that excite us into the lives of those around us.

Most people genuinely want the answers to the problems life gives them. If we are there, with hearts of compassion, minds of certain conviction, and words of love, we can share our source of hope.

Tonight was another great class. I hope everyone found it interesting and, more importantly, informative. I know I did researching it.

The final section of the night is the most important. If we are not going to include the LDS into orthodox Christianity, then why?

I believe faith starts with an acknowledgment of how God revealed Himself. Many faiths, including some Christian traditions, try again and again to form a conception of God that fits within their understanding. Joseph Smith tried to make God more like us. Perhaps the resolution comes when we commit ourselves to trusting God's revelation of Himself, and trying to shape our lives to His nature, rather then His to ours.

Next week, the Jehovah's Witness.
